The work of the author Ciprian Gabriel Ungureanu reflects the concerns for the regulation of constitutional law analyzed through the lens of domestic law and the applicable comparative law in this field. His volume highlights the study of some aspects related to the role and functions of civil society, the organizational forms of civil society, the legal status of non-governmental organizations and the comparable element of non-governmental organizations in Romania and the Republic of Moldova (Ungureanu, 2015).

Analysis of Participatory Development Implementation in Bantimurung Village, SimbangDistrict, Maros Regency

This research aims to explore the implementation of participatory development in Bantimurung Village, Belopa Utara District, Maros Regency, and identify the factors influencing its implementation. The research adopts a descriptive analysis approach, aiming to offer a systematic, factual, and accurate portrayal of existing data regarding participatory development in Bantimurung Village. Data were gathered through observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The findings reveal that participatory development in Bantimurung Village has been effectively executed across various stages, including planning, execution, and evaluation/monitoring. However, to enhance active participation, improvements are needed in each stage. Additionally, several factors influencing the implementation of participatory development in Bantimurung Village were identified, categorized as supporting and inhibiting factors. Supporting factors include the leadership of the Village Head, community participation, facilitator activity, budget availability, and clear regulations. On the other hand, inhibiting factors encompass land acquisition challenges, the role of non-governmental organizations, and human resources issues.

Partisipasi Masyarakat Pesisir dalam Melestarikan Hutan Mangrove di Kecamatan Pasir Sakti Kabupaten Lampung Timur

The purpose of this study was to analyze the level of community participation in activities to preserve mangrove forests and to analyze factors related to community participation in preserving mangrove forests in Pasir Sakti District, East Lampung. The research method used in this study was a survey method, then the collected data was tabulated based on each category and analyzed descriptively and Spearman Rank test. The conclusion is that the level of community participation in activities to preserve mangrove forests involving processes that include planning, implementation and evaluation is in the medium category, and the utilization of the results is in the high category. Factors related to community participation in preserving mangrove forests are level of non-formal education, type of work, number of family dependents, length of stay, distance of house from mangrove location, role of community leaders, role of farmer groups, government support, and role of non-governmental organizations. government organization, while the factors that are not related are age and level of education.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Through the Environmental Discourse: the State, Civil Society, the Problems of Development

This paper examines the response of political communities to the COVID-19 pandemic. Using methodological approaches such as political globalism, world-system and structural-functional analysis, the author examines the political conditions of nation-states for coping with the pandemic and its consequences. Within this framework, the problem of the systemic crisis of the modern state, the effectiveness of public administration and decision-making systems was also addressed. The focus was on issues of political development, considered in the context of the evolution of democracy, civic political participation, the role of non-governmental organisations and elites, and the relationship between values and goals in the global and national political agenda. The article also touches upon the problem of “infodemics.” The paper concludes with recommendations for adding an environmental component to the concept of national security.

Communicating climate change induced migration: the role of NGOs

This study addresses the underexplored issue of climate migration in non-governmental organisations (NGOs) communication, which is particularly relevant given the anticipated effects of climate change on migratory patterns. It paints a richer picture of NGOs’ visual and textual discourses on climate migration and delves into the ways in which NGOs' depictions of climate migrants reinforce the 'us' and 'them' dichotomy that characterises policy and media circuits' wider debate on this issue. NGOs visual practises and textual narratives depoliticize climate migrants by underlining their otherness and propensity to bring social instability and disturbance. This raises doubts about the efficacy of climate migration-related online public education and policy advocacy efforts run by NGOs. This paper innovates as it encourages NGOs to create new ways of depicting climate refugees. It provides a framework for thinking about the role that NGOs could play in creating new ways of discussing climate migration.

The role of NGOs in climate policies: The case of Tunisia

In this study, we examine the influential role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in shaping climate policy in Tunisia. Tunisia is a critical front in the global green transition. Our findings highlight how improved working conditions significantly increase NGO participation in climate initiatives, underscoring the value of a supportive operating environment. Growing professionalism within NGOs is particularly influencing strategic development in areas such as the Resilience 2050 and Low Carbon Economy 2050 programs. The interplay between NGOs and government agencies emerges as a transformative factor; exclusion from policymaking processes can lead some NGOs to intensify their climate action, while collaboration with governments and access to international funding generally strengthen NGOs’ commitment to broader climate agendas. We also explore the influence of resource constraints on NGOs’ ability to multitask, and the link between financial stability and political engagement. Our study highlights the importance of fostering robust NGO-government partnerships that balance local insights with global perspectives for effective climate action, and points to the need for such collaborations to support Tunisia's green transition within the broader context of global climate governance.

Interests convergence in global human rights politics

Abstract What explains the convergence and divergence of states’ interests related to global human rights? This study examines the dyadic similarity of the language used in the multilateral dialogue focusing on the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). The joint activities of NGOs influence states, and human rights norms are transmitted through IGOs. Using text analysis methods, the similarity between state recommendations during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is systematically quantified. Analyses suggest that a pair of states are more likely to use similar language in UPR recommendations as the number of joint activities of NGOs, shared memberships in IGOs, and shared experience in the UNHRC increases. The effects are robust even after controlling for different types of political relationships between states.

Comparison and positioning of NGOs aimed at children from the perspective of social marketing on Twitter

The role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in disseminating and protecting children’s rights is fundamental by increasing society’s knowledge about the reality that children face, thus mobilizing citizen attention. In this paper, we present an original study on social media data, specifically Twitter, to analyze childhood NGOs, evaluating the success of their content (through the likes obtained by publications) from the perspective of social marketing and prospective theory. In addition, it examines the positioning of organizations concerning the types of messages identified. The methodological approach is based on data mining, content analysis, and simple correspondence analysis through which the typology of the messages and positioning map are determined. The results suggest that these organizations generate predictable communication by publishing on specific topics and only increasing the number of tweets in emergencies when they are requiring urgent help. Some tweets show an immediate risk to which children are exposed if they do not receive help, which aligns with one of the premises of the Prospect Theory. Furthermore, a more significant number of posts does not necessarily imply a greater number of likes. Three types of messages have been determined: informative tweets that point out risks (type 1), impartial dialogue tweets (type 2), and action tweets that highlight benefits (type 3), confirmed through the Kruskal-Wallis test to have a relationship with impact. The positioning map shows that type 3 messages, which World Vision Spain opts for, are the most popular, followed by type 1, which Educo leans towards. Finally, there are those of type 2, with which UNICEF Spain is associated. The main implication is that our analysis validates the use of social media such as Twitter to analyze NGOs and proposes these social media platforms to be an important tool in mobilizing the community. In addition, this study offers parameters when constructing the messages for use in social marketing campaigns according to decisions that involve risk or certainty.

NGOs' Role in Sustaining Indigenous Knowledge in RuralBangladesh: Agriculture, Healthcare, and Disaster Management

This paper explores the indispensable role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in cultivating, applying, and conserving Indigenous knowledge within rural Bangladesh. It scrutinizes how NGOs sustain Indigenous knowledge by focusing on pivotal sectors like agriculture, local medicine, and disaster management. Employing qualitative methodologies—such as ethnographic interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), and case studies—the research was conducted in the Gabura union, Bangladesh, using primary and secondary data sources. The literature review underscores the significance of Indigenous knowledge in agriculture and disaster management while identifying gaps in comprehending knowledge conservation dynamics and the NGO's impact on Indigenous knowledge. It highlights how locals employ Indigenous Knowledge to combat natural disasters, particularly in agriculture, healthcare, and disaster management. Furthermore, it explores NGOs' active roles in preserving and leveraging Indigenous Knowledge, emphasizing its integration with modern scientific knowledge and significance in rural life. The study delves into Gabura residents' strategies for cyclone resilience, such as seeking refuge on embankments, relocating to higher ground, and preserving seeds and dry food. It emphasizes NGOs like BARCIK and their initiatives—Paramela and Kaviraj Mela—along with resource person engagement and safeguarding local knowledge endangered by globalization. BARCIK's training in disaster management, advocacy for traditional agricultural methods, and promotion of indigenous remedies in healthcare are highlighted. Ultimately, the paper underscores NGOs' significant contributions to fostering and applying Indigenous knowledge for sustainable rural development. It emphasizes the institutional processes in defining knowledge and the NGO's role in its reproduction.

Finding climate smart agriculture in civil-society initiatives

International civil society and non-government organisations (NGOs) play a role in implementing agricultural projects, which contribute to the mitigation, adaptation, and food security dimensions of climate-smart agriculture (CSA). Despite the growth of CSA, it remains unclear how CSA is designed, conceptualised, and embedded into agricultural development projects led and implemented by NGOs, creating a lack of clarity as to the direction of future of agricultural development interventions. This paper examines the extent to which development programmes from the NGO sector actively incorporate CSA principles to benefit smallholder farmers under the major pillars of CSA. Drawing from six projects’ documentation since 2009, we conducted a thematic analysis to reveal the alignment of projects with the pillars of CSA and discuss the extent to which CSA allows for localised adaptability given the diverse agricultural contexts in which civil society and NGOs work. We find that despite a lack of clarity in CSA definition and focus, the agricultural practices in the six projects make heterogenous contributions to the adoption of CSA principles. We illustrate the diversity of ways in which CSA is ‘done’ by a global NGO across six areas: greening and forests, practices and knowledge exchange, markets, policy and institutions, nutrition, carbon and climate, and gender. We discuss the need for balance in contextual adaptability across the three pillars of CSA with explicit consideration of trade-offs to reduce unintended outcomes from CSA initiatives. We conclude with reflections on the role of civil society and NGOs as boundary agents in the agricultural development sector.

European Technical Democracy? How Consumer Associations Did-or Did Not-Shape the 1980s Automotive Environmental Standards.

Did the 1980s automotive standards reflect the European Economic Community's move toward a "technical democracy" or a broader democratic deficit? In the early 1980s, Europe's automotive sector faced multiple challenges: the European Commission's desire to harmonize technical standards and achieve greater European integration, intense competition between manufacturers, and environmental issues like acid rain. Debates on reducing air pollution focused on unleaded petrol and catalytic converters. Two associations representing civil society in Brussels responded to the increase in environmental concerns with a 1982 joint campaign. Despite a rich historiography on pollutant emission standards, highlighting the strategies of governments and companies, no study has dealt with the role nongovernmental organizations played. Based on public and private archives, particularly those of the European Bureau of Consumers' Unions, this article argues the new regulations did not result from the EU's consultation with civil society organizations like consumer groups but rather with the automotive industry.

The primary aim of this research is to assess the effectiveness of existing biodiversity conservation strategies within Nigeria, considering their ecological, economic, and cultural dimensions. Employing a comprehensive literature review methodology, the paper systematically analyzes various conservation strategies, including legal and policy frameworks, community-based initiatives, the role of non-governmental organizations, and the impact of technological innovations and educational programs. This approach facilitates a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted nature of conservation efforts and their outcomes in Nigeria. The findings reveal a complex picture: while some strategies have yielded positive results, others face challenges in implementation and effectiveness. The study identifies key areas for improvement, such as the need for more robust policy enforcement, greater community engagement, and the integration of advanced technologies in conservation practices. Additionally, it underscores the importance of adaptive strategies in the face of climate change and other evolving environmental threats. In conclusion, the paper recommends a multi-dimensional approach to enhance biodiversity conservation in Nigeria. This approach should encompass strengthening legal frameworks, fostering community participation, leveraging technological advancements, and promoting environmental education and awareness. Role of non-governmental organizations in post-relocation support of reservoir migrations in China: a just transition perspective

In recent decades, energy transition has been a major structural change worldwide to replace fossil fuels. Hydropower is a valuable renewable energy source which can mitigate the electricity demand of livelihoods and help to achieve the target of carbon neutrality goals. However, owing to the hydropower construction, involuntary resettles are suffering with land and socio-economic security. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a vital role in promoting a just transition for reservoir migrants. The present study examines the work of local NGOs in a reservoir resettlement area in China through semi-structural interviews, and participant observations followed by qualitative analysis. Study explores how the NGOs organize reservoir migrants to participate in post-relocation support (PReS) projects. The study finds that the organized participation of reservoir migrants in PReS is the key process required to achieve a just transition. Moreover, NGOs ensure that all affected reservoir migrants have equal access to development opportunities through the three linked levels of co-construction, co-management, and co-sharing through the elite-driven establishment of benefit linkages and fair benefit distribution, and ultimately achieve a standard of living for migrants. Organized participation improves the equity and sustainability of benefits for reservoir migrants, but organizing reservoir migrants requires firm support from the local, regional and national governments, and the trust of migrants in local NGOs. Findings further stated that the PRes policy still has some blank spot, therefore, it is necessary to frame robust policy frameworks to restore the livelihoods of reservoir migrants.

Role of NGOs in providing available and affordable health care services to the slum people in Dhaka

Background/objectivesHealth services for the slum people of least developed or developing countries are quite unreachable, unavailable and unaffordable to them. The study attempts to demonstrate the role of non-government organizations (NGOs) in providing available and affordable health care services to the slum people in Dhaka with mixed method study. MethodsFace to face interviews conducted among the participants through semis-structured questionnaires by following systematic sampling technique. Four focus group discussions were conducted with people of slum. Quantitative data were analyzed with SPSS version 23.0 while Braun and Clarke's six steps of thematic analysis were pursued for analyzing qualitative data. ResultsFindings shows that NGOs provided health services to slum people with available and affordable roles. Quantitative results demonstrate that NGOs’ available health services cover with services facilities and regular sources of service providers. EPI, FP and hygienic services with 9.3 % and delivery services and health and nutrition services with 9.2 % become the most available health services of NGOs. Community static providers are the main source (40.5 %) of providing regular health care services for the slum people whereas EPI (25.2 %), blood test (22.1 %) and FP packages (20.0 %) considered the most affordable health services of NGOs. Qualitative findings imply two major themes availability and affordability of health services under where many subthemes are stated. ConclusionsFindings indicate that the NGOs provide available health care services for the slums with EPI, FP, delivery services, health and nutrition services and hygienic programme. Results further imply that availability of health services further has taken place with providing regular sources of services with static clinic and CSP services. Initiative should be taken to make health systems of the country affordable, friendly, and available. Essentials health services can be provided to the slum and hard to reach areas’ people through NGOs health facilities. As NGOs service provision is good so measures should be taken for the continuity of care of the NGOs health services.

The sociology of global health: Inequality, disease‐related stigma, and the rise of nongovernmental organizations

AbstractThis article is a review of global health literature, emphasizing the evolution in health terminology in recent decades and noteworthy research areas of global health. This review identifies global inequality and disease‐related stigma as key social determinants of health and central problems improving health outcomes. Within global health, there is a growing discourse surrounding health disparities, particularly among the world's most disadvantaged populations. Additionally, the field notes an increase in global health nonprofits, international governmental organizations (IGOs), and regulatory bodies. As such, this paper examines the scope of empirical global health research with consideration of inequality and stigma as well as the role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in health outcomes for the developing world. The review also discusses the role of IGOs and global health regulatory bodies in shaping development and health outcomes. A broad review of literature finds that although chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are currently the largest cause of poor health in the world's most impoverished nations, these are largely untargeted by NGO efforts, which may exacerbate the state of global inequality. However, the impact that NGOs could have on ameliorating the effects of NCDs remains understudied and is a promising direction for future scholarly efforts.

Challenges of Food Distribution Process for Internally Displaced Persons in Non-governmental Organizations: An Ethnographic Study

This ethnographic discourse highlights the problems and challenges of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as explores the food distribution procedure. At the same time, the study also exposes the intolerance of international and national NGO employees and workers because the rights of IDPs are not protected during the food distribution process. The real effort of the international agencies is to manage and rehabilitate the situation of ceasefire from conflict circumstance to the relief settlement. The study used an ethnographic inquiry method in district Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, depending upon two key consultants and one focus group interview as well as one focus group discussion with a total of twenty (n=20) participants. The interview guide was used for the data collection. The data were analyzed through NVivo 12 Plus software and also manually analyzed with inductive thematic analysis approach with open coding, noting repeated themes, keywords, and critical events interpreted into different categories. The study concludes that the IDPs were not satisfied with the aid/food distribution procedures of NGOs. It was recommended that the government should evaluate the role of NGOs with the help of district social welfare officers and conduct descriptive research regarding the food distribution process.

The role of NGOs in the domestic implementation of the African Union Transitional Justice Policy Framework: perspectives from Uganda

This article explores the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the domestic implementation of the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP). It uses Uganda as a prism through which to examine the implementation of two key constitutive elements of the AUTJP: criminal prosecutions and traditional justice. Besides reflections based on theauthor’s experience in Uganda, the analysis rests on an extensive study and review of literature and qualitative interviews. The article argues that NGOs have the potential to sequence the constitutive TJ elements of the AUTJP, where there are competing narratives of peace versus justice. While local NGOs are pivotal in fostering local ownership of TJ, the findings reveal thecritical role of NGO networks in the domestic implementation of TJ. The article concludes that there is a compelling case to be made for the continued involvement of NGOs in the domestic implementation of TJ
